Toh Continues Medal Run with Backstroke Bronze

Singapore swimmer Toh Wei Soong went two-for-two in Nakhon Ratchasima after clinching bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke S7-S8, as Danielle Moi stayed in contention for medals with two races left.

Toh went two for two on the second day of swimming competition at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games, bagging his second medal in as many events – a bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke S7-S8.

“I am feeling good, and I’m excited for the sprints up ahead. It’s been an enjoyable time so far in Thailand. I’m very happy that our team is pulling all the stops, and everyone’s in a pretty good mood, and we’re having fun,” said the national record holder in the 100m back S7.

On Thursday (Jan 22) morning, Toh clocked a time of 1:18.31, which put him just behind Vietnam’s Vo Huynh Anh Khoa (1:12.94) and Malaysia’s Rusmadi Rusdianto (1:14.77) – the reigning gold and silver medallists respectively in the S8 category of the event.

“Today, I went out there and raced as hard as I could and tried to keep the stroke and execution as close to the plan as possible. There are definitely things to work out in the lead up to the Asian Para Games, where I will be defending my title in the 100m backstroke S7, but it’s a good way to start the season.”

With three events still to come, the 27-year-old’s spirits and energy remain high.

“It’s all been straight finals in the morning, so that means 50% off the total number of races you have to swim. That plays a big role in giving you a lot more energy to go out hard the next day,” he added.

Danielle Moi, who took silver in the 100m fly S14 race on Wednesday (Jan 21), came fourth in the 200m freestyle S14 (2:32.82) and fifth in the 100m free S14 (1:08.40), respectively.

Bronze medallist in both these events in the 2022 edition of the Games, Moi came just shy of the podium places.

She has two races left in her program – the 100m backstroke S14 and 200m individual medley SM14, where she is the reigning bronze medallist and national record holder.

Having medalled in all five events she entered in at the 2023 Games, which included three one-lap events (back, fly, free), Moi has not been disheartened by her showing so far.

“There’s not much difference competing in the 100 and 200, because we also do this in training. So it doesn’t matter where we are at. It’s just about putting in our best effort and how far we can go and beat our personal best,” Moi said, adding that medals were just a bonus.
