Amateur Golfer Wang Mei Zhen Reflects on “Unforgettable” BMW Golf Cup Victory

Off the back of becoming the first Singaporean to win an individual title at the BMW Golf Cup World Final, amateur golfer Wang Mei Zhen reflects on her unforgettable week in South Africa, the friendships forged through golf, and inspiring others to dream bigger.

For amateur golfer Wang Mei Zhen, who became the first Singaporean to win an individual award at the BMW Golf Cup World Final when she won the Ladies category in March, just being part of the international field was an “unforgettable” experience.

“It is definitely one of the biggest and most memorable tournaments I’ve won because of the international field and the opportunity to represent Singapore on such a prestigious stage. What makes it especially meaningful is competing against champions from so many different countries, which makes the achievement feel very special to me.”

Her triumph at the six-day event held at the Fancourt Golf Resort in South Africa also brought back fond memories of her junior golfing days when she used to compete internationally.

“I competed internationally during my junior golfing years, so being back in that environment brought back a lot of memories and reminded me how much I enjoyed competing overseas,” the 2013 Hong Kong Ladies Amateur winner said.

“Competing at Fancourt alongside golfers from all over the world was unforgettable. The atmosphere was competitive but also very welcoming, and every day felt thoughtfully planned and professionally run.”

“From the hospitality to the course setup and overall experience, everything was done at a world-class level, and it made the event feel very special from start to finish.”

But despite her momentous victory, it was the camaraderie among competitors from around the world that made the experience all the more meaningful.

“In terms of golf, there were definitely some important shots and moments during the week that helped build momentum, but honestly, what I’ll remember most is the overall experience, representing Singapore, meeting amazing people, and being part of such a prestigious international event.”

“Golf has a unique way of bringing people together, and it was amazing meeting golfers from so many different backgrounds. Even though we were competing, everyone was very friendly and supportive. We shared stories about golf in our respective countries, our experiences during the tournament, and even life outside golf.”

“Those interactions made the event feel bigger than just a competition.”

After winning the BMW Golf Cup National Final in Singapore last August (38 points) to earn her spot at the World Final, Wang entered the tournament free from the shackles of “unnecessary pressure”.

“Every golfer wants to compete well, but my main goal initially was to enjoy the event, learn from the experience, and play the best golf I could. I didn’t want to put unnecessary pressure on myself.”

“As the tournament progressed, confidence naturally grew, but I think going in with an open mindset helped me perform more freely.”

And with a new notch under her belt, Wang has a newfound belief in her capabilities on the golf course.

“This win gives me a lot more confidence and belief in what I’m capable of. Competing internationally and winning against such a strong field showed me that I can perform under pressure and adapt to different environments.”

“At the same time, it motivates me to continue improving because experiences like this show that there is always another level to aim for.”

Wang also hopes her accomplishment on the international stage will inspire other amateur golfers.

“You do not have to be a professional golfer to dream big or challenge yourself internationally. With dedication, preparation, and belief, opportunities like this are possible. I also hope it encourages more amateur golfers in Singapore to put themselves out there, enjoy the game, and believe that they belong on the international stage, too.”
